Stephen Colbert’s Hometown Hospitality With Senator Elizabeth Warren [VIDEO]

YouTube

This may be the best video I’ve ever seen featuring a presidential candidate. I voted for Elizabeth Warren in the California primary, and this just makes feel even better about it. I want this woman in the White House, please.

Stephen Colbert travels to his home state of South Carolina ahead of that state’s Democratic primary to dig into some meaty campaign issues with presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Special thanks to our friends at HUSK Restaurant in Charleston for the warm hospitality. Next time you’re in town look them up at http://www.huskrestaurant.com. #Colbert #Election2020 #ElizabethWarren

I’m envious that they ate at Husk.

It’s a great restaurant and we got to eat there when visiting Charleston a few years back.

And the quiz is frickin’ hilarious.

This might actually cause a wingnut brain to short circuit: Defending a company’s right to abuse their workers while also…defending a company’s right to do without workers at all.

I can understand where you’d forget that. I don’t think either his twokays character or his current late-night self is allowed to have a Lowland SC accent because even its white version is somewhat impenetrable to Westerners in particular, so it’s assiduously trained out of anyone who tries to join an agency as talent.

I would never have guessed he was Southern, let alone SC.

This morning, NY said that 70 were asked to isolate themselves relating to the covid19 outbreak. This afternoon, the number has grown 10 fold to 700+. Doesn’t meant 700 cases identified - only that authorities want to be careful to isolate those who might have had exposures and limit their contacts to slow/stop the outbreak.

From what I remember, he naturally has an accent but got rid of it because of perceptions. I’ve had friends who are native northerners tell me I sound slightly Southern. I think my youngest brother has a slight more bit of a twang that I do not have but I may be hearing things too.

re: #560 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

And then you find out the following:
1. Flippy’s maintenance personnel can’t be paid minimum wage.
2. If Flippy breaks during lunch hour you’re SOL - since you have no spare staff to
pick up the slack. (And possibly untrained on the equipment.)

3. If Flippy is not properly maintained I presume you get undercooked* and overcooked food.

* - And this possibly leading to some very nice lawsuits or very unhappy health inspectors.

That’s assuming that “Flippy” can just be pushed to the side and a manager (places that choose to automate tend to be understaffed) take over the fry station until a maintenance crew can come in and get “Flippy” working again. It’s more likely that “Flippy” is bolted to the floor and so that manager either will have to work around it (increasing the odds of injury) or that station will be effectively shutdown until somebody can come out to fix the problem.

And since maintenance in the service industry is usually a low priority (companies try to save more money by expecting workers to handle the “routine” stuff), you can expect “Flippy” to be down rather often by the first anniversary as computers and robotics alike are not overly tolerant of poor maintenance.

And I’d bet that Flippy’s proximity to hot oil all the time is probably not conducive to the operation of the necessary electronics and servos.

The heat will definitely be a problem, as either you have to build “Flippy” out of heat-resistant materials/components (read: expensive) or you are looking at a machine that will need regular replacement of component as the heat does very bad things to them. In order to attract sales, I’ve little doubt that the company is keeping mum on what happens if “Flippy” has a sensor short out and it slings hot oil across the counter.

The White House moved on Thursday to tighten control of coronavirus messaging by government health officials and scientists, directing them to clear all statements and public appearance with the office of Vice President Mike Pence, according to several officials familiar with the new approach.

But with Mr. Pence’s announcement, Dr. Birx becomes the third person to be designated as the administration’s primary coronavirus official.
Mr. Trump said that “Mike is going to be in charge, and Mike will report back to me.” Mr. Pence said it will be Dr. Birx. Meanwhile, Alex M. Azar II, the health and human services secretary, remains the chairman of the government’s coronavirus task force.

Thing is, I don’t think any “fry cooks” have reason to worry that “Flippy” will take their jobs. Why? Because we heard this BS before, when we were told that the “Burger Machine” would replace line cooks and be the answer to demands for higher wages. The company eventually dropped the project because while a few restaurants expressed interest, they never got a single order to actually put one into service.

Because the cost of acquiring that kind of machine, and that can handle all the complex tasks of cooking food, is far higher than any restaurant can actually bear to pay as upfront cost (or even paid off over time). And we know cooks can deviate from the menu for special orders with relative ease, but a machine has to be programmed for each specific task, and there’s no way to deviate.

And when the machine fails, it shuts down the restaurant. Fast food restaurants in particular have multiple line cooks.

Ultimately, it’s because restaurants don’t want to pay living wages and pass along the costs to their customers (which could raise the cost of a typical burger by what? $.50?

I think the techies, futurists, etc whatever they call themselves don’t get is there’s always going to be a human side of life that we crave. We’re social animals. Our growth as a species is due to the fact that we have a better understanding of our place in the universe than any other species. Technology will keep on growing. I have no idea what the digital technology of my 40’s will be let alone my 50’s but the human element will always be there.

It’s classic cost/benefit analysis, with all the known (and unknown) costs of adopting such machines making the supposed benefits less valuable than they’re being sold as. Like I said downstairs, the service industry is big on trying to save money where it can and so likes to put as much of the burden on their staff for “routine maintenance” as possible. Why? Because they can control the wages of those staff and find creative ways to work them overtime without paying them for such.

I’ve not seen it anywhere, but I imagine the companies responsible for these machines include in proposed contracts that all maintenance and repairs be solely through their own employees. And that right there would be why even the big chains that have the money to experiment with such automation seem hesitant to jump at the opportunity.

I had a service issue with Comcast and called a listed service number. I was taken around the loop twice on automated responses that I knew would not address the issue. At no point was I offered more than limited options that I knew would not work, or even an option to speak directly to an agent. Eventually back at their main menu I managed by going into non-tech issue options to get to an agent.

And the first thing I told the agent was that if I got snarky it was not their fault and that I was upset at the automated system.

And then the agent went through *their* script that had no solutions for me and just piled on the meaningless customer service platitudes. About 20 seconds in I just responded “yes”, “no thank you”, “yes” repeatedly to end the call as quickly as possible.

(I sometimes wish there was a serious option in these to indicate you actually know something about the issue, it’s not a simple customer service thing, please connect me with someone seriously interested in collecting problem data and dealing with it.)

Exactly. Multi-year service contracts where their techs do everything from cleaning out the gunk that builds up to major work is where they expect to make their money. But that’s gonna run right up against companies that rely upon franchises whose staff either handle the work themselves or call up a local “cheap” repairman to keep their equipment running. About the biggest concession most would be willing to make would be to have the techs come out and teach the managers (who will then be expected to teach staff) how to do the “routine” stuff like how to clean the machines or basic trouble-shooting, with the techs expected to be on hot standby when a breakdown occurs in the middle of a lunch rush.

The Comcast system after two “failures” with word answers defaults into giving you keypad options. Doesn’t help when the options are essentially “doesn’t help”, “doesn’t help” and “go back to previous menu”.

I was trying to work out whether there was a particular answer that would skip it right into the agent queue.

(And pissed at Comcast/Infinity item #2 was trying to physically return the old modem after I got the new one. Took it to a store listed on the website as a place to return equipment. The guy there told me they didn’t handle returns and I’d have to take it to a major center in Philadelphia or an alternate one in Delaware. Annoying since I was working from their website’s own return information.

So when I was in King of Prussia the other day I stuck my head into the Infinity store there and asked if they handled equipment returns. They said yes, so I grabbed the old modem out of the car and returned it there. Also went on-line and put in a bad review for the initial store I went into. Pity I didn’t write down the guy’s name.)

And “hot standby” is expensive as hell in any case. Assuming you get someone. And you won’t in time to deal with a lunch hour stoppage simply due to distance and response time minimums.

And then there’s the costs of setting up that support network, as these companies generally are either start-ups or are involved in other industries, which are costs that will be passed on to the customers.

It really should have been handled like a miniseries, instead of the stereotypical zombie flick we got instead. I get it, Brad, you paid to get this movie made. But taking what was a novel with a myriad cast showing the strength of the human spirit and replacing it with 2 hours of watching a guy getting other people killed robbed me of any desire I had to watch it ever again.

As the outbreak continues, the individual States will be releasing the number of people who either became ill and recovered or died. There is nothing this maladministration can do to prevent that. Said States will also be demanding valid information about treating the infection as well. If they don’t get it, they will be raising even more hell.

I mean you all know I prefer Biden to Warren but Warren I give tons of props for the CFPB. I admire the hell out of that because the government should be protecting consumers. I think that’s an important part of government. And she got it implemented. Bernie’s had tons of ideas about what’s wrong with our society going back to when my father was getting in trouble at patriarchal school. There’s not a lot of solutions he’s made despite being in Washington since 1990. Now you can act like “Oh, it’s just because Washington will never listen to a man with bold ideas like Bernie” but Ted Kennedy and Barney Frank were and are just as much left wing as Bernie if not more so and they have receipts and maybe the fact that Bernie can’t get anything done is on Bernie. I don’t mind the young progressives in the Democratic Party, I welcome them but please try to get stuff passed before you act like you speak for all or even most of us. I’m no moderate. I don’t think we should be uncritical of capitalism but I also don’t believe acting like everything would be peachy if we were socialist is right either. And besides despite what they say, the Nordics really aren’t socialist. We need to implement some sort of American social democracy based on what works here.

There were a series of rollercoaster days and weeks like this.

There were three separate occasions where the markets dropped more than 7% from September to December 2008 (a 4th day was just shy of 7%). There were also a couple of big recovery days: the 2008 crisis included two separate days in October in which there were 10% drops.

Overall the markets shed nearly 50% of their value from their pre-crisis high.

This week’s losses are about 10% in total.

Folks at Genentech had discovered borrowing on margin, so a lot of us borrowed against our stock from the Employee Stock Plan, myself included. re: #49 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

If you’re in an automated phone system loop, usually pressing “0” multiple times will transfer you to a human agent.

Then if all else fails, tell the agent to turn to the page in their script book that tells them to escalate you to a supervisor.

Me: Um. How much do you pay in taxes? And how much do you get in crop subsidies, and discounted insurance and now to offset the trade war”

Them: (scowl forming)

Me: Hey, I’ve been having a bad year because of the trade war myself. Can I get a slice of your socialism checks? I pay taxes too.

Them: (unintelligible cursing)

Here I will point out that in Japan neither handshakes or fist bumps are common. Genuflecting slightly is.

And Japan has now many cases o COVID-19.

Part of the reason the Japanese are clamping down so hard right now on public gatherings is an attempt to get over the hump wrt new infections as soon as possible.

This will hopefully see the Olympics occurring after COVID-19 cases peak worldwide.

I heard last night that San Francisco’s Chinatown is becoming a ghost town. Some restaurants are seeing one table for the whole night.

My sister’s friend was shopping at her local Jewel supermarket a couple days ago when she saw a great bargain on packaged fresh salmon. She was putting it in her shopping cart when she noticed it was imported from China — and she immediately put it back. She said that it looked like no one was willing to purchase it despite the extraordinarily low price.

A Southern California city is barring people who were on the coronavirus-stricken Diamond Princess cruise ship from entering its town

Leaders of Costa Mesa are blocking COVID-19 patients from being transferred to a nearly-empty hospital in the Southern California city.

A US district judge issued the restraining order last week and extended it until Monday, during which time state and federal officials will share more of their plans regarding housing patients in Costa Mesa.
